Heart Healthy Celery

Celery

Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food. ~ Hippocrates

Celery may be a delicious addition to soups (and mighty tasty slathered with almond butter) but did you know that it is a heart healthy food?  Celery contains 3-n-butyl phthalide – a compound that has been shown to lower blood pressure.

Celery can lower blood pressure by around 12-14% and can also lower cholesterol by about 7%.  You need to eat about a quarter pound per day (4 stalks) to see results.  Consult with a Naturopathic Doctor or other qualified health professional to discuss whether this is an option for you.  People taking lithium, blood pressure medications, or sedatives should discuss possible drug interactions.

Another reason to love celery – the ancient Greeks used it to make wine, which was served as an award at athletic games.  Tasty?  I’d try it…
